my 2014: part 2

digging in to my second set of Anuschka’s questions today. i really love this process of reflecting on the past year and getting ready for the new one. i think it’s so important to get your head straight for the start of a new year. at least if you start out grounded, with a clear conscience and good intentions, you are starting out ahead, right? would love to hear how y’all are preparing!

11. If someone wrote a book about your life in 2014, what kind of genre would it be? A comedy, love story, drama, film noir or something else?
definitely drama. i mean, we’re not talking Steel Magnolias caliber here, but we cried, we yelled, we laughed, we hugged it out. and there was definitely a lot of blush and bashful up in here, y’all.

12. What was the most important lesson you learnt in 2014?
everything won’t fall apart if i check out for a minute. i’m a total control freak when it comes to my home and my family. i just like things to be a certain way and if i don’t do it, it won’t be done right. god, i sound crazy, i know. this year i learned it was okay to go to bed with the downstairs a mess and that when left to his own devices, Spy can keep Miss Girl alive and not let the house burn down. and some days, just that is good enough.

13. Which mental block(s) did you overcome?
no lie. i was in a rut in several ways. overcoming the idea that this is just how it’s going to be now (mainly, in relation to feeling overwhelmed, put upon and like what i needed was never a priority) was huge. i remembered that i am in control of how things are going to be and if i don’t like them, i can change them. it’s not always easy, but it’s possible.

14.What 5 people did you most enjoy spending time with?
mostly, these coconuts. but outside of Spy and Miss Girl, i had some great times with my wining writers, 2 former co-workers whose friendship has weathered job changes for us all, and the lovely C, who i mentioned in the last round as the person i can always count on.

15. What was your biggest break-through moment career-wise?
see #20.

16. How did your relationship to your family evolve?
though i didn’t think it was possible, i believe i’ve come to love Miss Girl even more. i probably love Spy a little more, too, as i’ve come to understand and accept more of the things about him that drive me crazy.

17. What book or movie affected your life in a profound way?
this is a tough one. i tend to read or view and move on. but here’s what i remember. Psychos made me laugh out loud. and Maleficent made me remember how gorgeous a movie can be and actually like Angelina Jolie, which is huge.

18. What was your favourite compliment that you received this year?
call me shallow, but i definitely loved hearing how great i looked after losing weight.

19. What little things did you most enjoy during your day-to-day life?
banana smoothies, runs in the cemetery and every single little thing my daughter does.

20.What cool things did you create this year?
outside of what i created for this blog, i’m lucky enough to get to create things for my day job. not even exaggerating, this year, i got to work on 1 of the top 5 projects of my career so far. my team and i helped our home builder client launch an industry-leading digital design center, where their clients come to make all the selections for their new custom home. we imagined, designed and built tools that actually help the process along, as well as creating multiple large format videos for the physical space. i love walking into that place and seeing how it’s all come to life.

  1. I really enjoy reading your blog. I feel like I can relate to you cause I too am a control freak. I struggle with the idea of going to bed before Hero because who knows when Dad will put that kid in bed. *sigh*
